According to a 2006 study done at Duke University Medical Center, individuals who added 15 milligrams of zinc daily into their diets demonstrated increased nerve regeneration and improved inner ear functioning— both associated with preventing tinnitus from occurring in a large portion of its participants.

Furthermore, many study participants reported a decrease in symptoms following just 3 months of taking the supplement, which could suggest even further protection from impaired auditory functioning over time when paired with proper rest and relaxation habits.

In one study published by Healthline, researchers tested the effects of l-arginine on auditory neuron cell death caused by oxidative stress. The results showed that supplementing with l-arginine had a significant protective effect on auditory neurons from exposure to free radicals.

These findings suggest that supplementing with l-arginine can provide antioxidant protection for ears against free radical damage, which may be beneficial for ear health maintenance over time.

In yet another study published by Neuroscience Letters, researchers found that taking a combination of vitamins B6 (pyridoxine) and B12 (cobalamin) could protect against progressive age-related hearing loss. The study included 68 individuals who were also affected by diabetes mellitus.

Results showed that 73% of those taking pyridoxine/cobalamin had lower levels of auditory thresholds than those not taking the supplement. This suggests that supplementing with vitamin B may be beneficial in protecting against age-related hearing loss.
